Waterhouse Eyeing 2014 Kingstown Town Classic with Pheidon

November 19th, 2014

Returning to racing in typically good form this time in, trainer Gai Waterhouse has confirmed she is eyeing a berth in the year’s final Group 1 feature, the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse for talented four-year-old Pheidon.

Overcoming a forgettable first-up performance for ninth in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) when displaying a keen turn of foot to finish fourth in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) on September 20th, Pheidon continued to impress when overcoming an early check to finish sixth in the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 4th.

Returning to the winner’s circle in the City Jeep Handicap (2040m) on October 24th, the Al Maher gelding placed third in the Listed James Boag’s Premium Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day before placing an agonizingly-close second to Zabisco in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown last weekend.

Understandably pleased with the form and class displayed by Pheidon this time in, Waterhouse told the West Australian her team is actively seeking a passage for the in-form runner to travel to Perth and is confident he is more than a chance of success in the 2014 Kingston Town Classic on December 6th.

“We’re keen to bring the horse over and are hopeful of getting a flight this week,” Waterhouse said.

“We are hopeful of having a flight confirmed within the next 24 hours.”

Securing a commendable race record of four wins and a further five minor places over his 14 competitive appearances on course so far, Pheidon was a standout performer for Waterhouse over his maiden preparation through summer and autumn of this year; winning minor events over 1350m and 1500m respectively first-up and continuing to build towards a strong victory in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) most notably on March 14th.
