Parnham Chooses Rommel for 2014 Kingston Town Classic

November 28th, 2014

Faced with a tough task of selecting to take the ride on two leading chances for success, jockey Steven Parnham has confirmed he will partner exciting three-year-old Rommel in the featured Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on December 6th.

The regular partner of classy four-year-old Ihtsahymn, Parnham was unable to help the Fred Kersley-trained gelding to a positive result in last weekend’s featured Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in finishing 10th, but has elected to take the ride on Rommel in the Kingston Town classic after taking out the Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) on the same card.

Confident three-year-olds have an edge when lining up for the Kingston Town Classic, Parnham told the West Australian he believes he is a great chance of securing a third victory in the Group 1 featured aboard Rommel in 2014.

“I spoke to Fred (Kersley) and I just felt that three-year-olds have a big advantage in the race,” Parnham said.

“I’ve won the race on two three-year-olds and rode God Has Spoken when he ran second as a three-year-old.

“They come into the race with the weight pull. I just wanted to follow that formula.

“He’s peaking at the right time.

“Ihtsahymn will improve stepping up to 1800, but the way Rommel ran out the 1600; the 1800 won’t pose too many problems.”

Securing a commendable race record of seven wins and a further three minor places from just 18 competitive appearances on course so far, Ihtsahymn undoubtedly found career-best form over the 2013 Perth spring and summer; placing sixth in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) before claiming consecutive wins in the W.A. Guineas, Kingston Town Classic and Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m).

Aiming to complete a similar path this year as his Kingston Town rival in 2013, Rommel placed sixth in a minor over 1200m on November 1st before running second in the Fairetha Stakes leading into his W.A. Guineas triumph.
