Moriarty the 2014 Kingston Town Classic Winner

December 8th, 2014

Australia’s champion trainer Chris Waller celebrated his 10th Group 1 win for the season already over the weekend with veteran stayer Moriarty beating home the locals in the Kingston Town Classic 2014 at Ascot Racecourse.

The Perth Summer Racing Carnival classic rounded out elite level racing for another calendar year with a talented field facing off in the $500,000 Group 1 Tabtouch Kingston Town Classic (1800m).

A patient ride from Hong Kong’s champion jockey Douglas Whyte secured the win with Clodovil seven-year-old Moriarty coming from fifth off the pace through the field to win by one and a half lengths.

It was an expected improvement on his slashing last-start third when debuting in WA on November 22 in the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m).

The suspended Nash Rawiller was replaced by Whyte for the rematch with the Railway Stakes winner Elite Belle over the weekend, Moriarty better suited to the extra metres and the weight relief under the weight-for-age conditions of the Kingston Town Classic.

Putting in a gutsy late run he wore down the front-running young three-year-old local Disposition who had the weight advantage, and posted a one and a quarter length win over Grant Williams’ equal $4.60 favourite.

In third to finish off the Kingston Town Classic trifecta was then Disposition’s stable mate Elite Belle, the Railway Stakes winning mare crossing two and a quarter lengths off the winner from Sydney.

Fourth then went to Wez Hunter’s Group 1 The Goodwood winner Smokin’ Joey, who also ran fourth in the Railway, just ahead of the Railway and Kingston Town fifth placed Fuchsia Bandana.

On December 20 the summer racing action in Perth continues with the $250,000 Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) back at Ascot.

While connections were originally looking at extending Moriarty’s summer carnival raid over on the west coast to run in that, it has since been confirmed he will head home and bypass the CB Cox Stakes.
