2015 Kingston Town Classic to Figure for Magic Artist

November 10th, 2015

German import Magic Artist missed the cut of horses invited to Sha Tin to contest the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) in December, and will instead be set for an appearance in the 2015 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).

Magic Artist has been a strong and consistent performer for leading German trainer Andreas Wohler since first appearing on course in 2013; posting three wins and a further six minors through a total of fifteen starts in Europe.

Debuting in Australia this year for a hard-fought fourth in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day, Magic Artist was unlucky to be hampered early in last weekend’s Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) but again mustered an impressive turn of foot to finish fourth.

Understandably disappointed to have missed the cut for the Hong Kong Cup, Australia Bloodstock’s Andrew Lovett told Racing Victoria the team is pleased to instead target the 2015 Kingston Town Classic and are more than confident the horse is up to the race.

“We missed the invite to Hong Kong, so this just fits in,” Lovett said.

“We’re not keen to send him to the paddock, he’s only had the two runs for the new owners and he raced well.

“Even though he backed up and raced well, these international horses do appear to respond better with their runs spaced.

“It’s unlikely he’ll run in the Railway, but we’ll let Andreas make the decision.

“I think he’s a dead-set mile-and-a-quarter horse.

“He raced well over a mile, but he just finds it a bit short.

“The 2000 is ideal, but 1800 is the next-best option.”

Resuming this year for success in the Group 3 Premio Ambrosiano (2012m) in Italy on April 19th, Magic Artist progressed to a close second in the Group 1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica (2012m) before placing fifth in each of the Group 1 Manhattan Stakes (2012m) and Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis (2012m).

Magic Artist is yet to figure in early 2015 Kingston Town Classic betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, however leading local mare Delicacy remains outright favourite for success at a quote of $4.80.
