2016 Kingston Town Classic Ideal for Kawi

November 29th, 2016

Trainer Allan Sharrock is confident that multiple Group 1 winner Kawi will prove tough to beat under the conditions, when he lines up for the 2016 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on Saturday.

Posting an impressive career total of thirteen wins and a further eight minors through only twenty-eight competitive starts, Kawi has already contested two starts in Australia beginning with the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) on November 5th.

Last seen running on well for sixth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot a fortnight ago, Sharrock is confident that the Savabeel gelding will relish a step up in distance into the Kingston Town Classic field, as well as a drop back in weight.

“He was always going to find it hard in the Railway giving away so much weight, but he still went really well,” Sharrock told NZ Racing Desk.

“He’s got the conditions to suit and he’s in great condition himself.”

Kawi has been a strong and consistent performer for Sharrock throughout his entire racing career so far, but did not break through for his first win at the highest level until the 2015 edition of the Group 1 Makfi Challenge (1400m).

Winning each of the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) and Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) on through summer, Kawi was returned to the paddock after finishing third in the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) and fifth in the Group 1 Haunui Farm Classic (1600m).

Trialling well in the lead-up to his spring return, Kawi stormed home to successfully defend his title in the Makfi Challenge Stakes, before justifying his clear odds-on favouritism with success in the Group 1 Horlick Plate (1600m) on September 17th, in what was his only other start prior to the Lee Steere Stakes.

Included amongst a list of sixteen nominations on Monday, Kawi is expected to be confirmed in the 2016 Kingston Town Classic field by midday, Wednesday.
